Purpose: Skills: Learn to integrate primary sources with secondary written sources as support for an argument. The Major General Learning Outcomes include: Writing and Critical thinking, and Information Literacy. Knowledge: By doing this assignment, you will have a better understanding the ways in which biographies or what historians call monographs (books on very specific subjects) are used in various discipline. The assignment: A) Read the biography, The Life of Augustus by Gaius Tranquillus Suetonius, will be found in the week 7/8 folders. You have previously read the Life of Alexander by Plutarch. Also, read the biographical sketches of Justinian and Theodora by Procopius found in the week 10/28 folder. After you have read them choose either Plutarch and Suetonius to compare to Procopius. B) You must also find two secondary sources, which will help you with the historical context of both men. These sources need to be scholarly in nature and can be found in a variety of ways. Either print books on Ancient Rome and the Medieval Byzantine Empire or in the database called JSTOR. As with the first assignment, you will be intertwining the primary source of the biographies and the secondary sources written now. C) Suetonius biographies all follow the same pattern; it is this pattern I want you to concentrate on: a. Stress the deeds, not the thoughts and motivations. b. Focus on the main character; keep secondary people or less important characters in the background. c. Be sure to cover three things: appearance, cultural interests, sex life d. It can be understood by the reader how the biographer sees the person: good, bad, indifferent (although this third is rarely seen.) D) Once you have read the biographies and the secondary sources, you will write a paper of no less than 750 words (not including any title page or bibliography information). Your paper should follow the same pattern as above in point C. a. In two of the three biographies, written by Plutarch, Suetonius and Procopius, identify the 4 elements in point C. Give concrete specific examples from both readings as evidence. b. In what ways does Procopius biography differ from that of Plutarch or Suetonius; give examples from both readings; they should be different from the examples in a. right above. E) Remember, your paper must include the following: an Introduction, a conclusion, in text citations for all paraphrasing and direct quotes, and a bibliography of all sources viewed, including those used for citations. The Bibliography information should be complete. I attach the same rubric used for the first assignment. * MLA Format Please, and please remember to include the 2 secondary sources. Thank you.
