Research Essay Topic 5 Modern theorists (Marx, Simmel, Marcuse, Horkheimer and Adorno) have generally been highly critical of what consumer objects do to people. On the other hand, contemporary theorists (Featherstone, Giddens, Miller and Ian Woodward) have tended to embrace the possibilities of consumer objects for constructing identities. Outline and critically assess both positions with reference to key theorists in the debate, starting with the reading by Ian Woodward. Use examples to illustrate your arguments.
