Choosing one of the special needs offender groups covered in this course, that you will NOT group present on, students will write a personal reflection on their reaction, attitude, and feelings toward this identified group. Although it is a reflection paper, you must display some researched knowledge of the population and not just wing it off the top of your head (or heart).
This assignment is designed to provide you with the opportunity to explore the way in which you think and feel about the special needs offenders you will likely work with in the CJS field. You are required to reference credible research about this population and not blogs or opinion pieces. You are encouraged to choose the special needs offender group that makes you the most uncomfortable or whom will be the most challenging for you to work with!
QUESTIONS TO BE ADDRESSED:
1. Referenced materials report on research findings (7 points).
a) Correctly identify the special needs offender group have you chosen. Research this offender group and write about the characteristics and vulnerability of this offender group. You must reference at least 4 credible sources (not the same one twice) and apply in-text citations in APA style referencing. Your research must align with the lecture materials for that offender group this means that you cannot promote a perspective that is different than what was taught in this course.
b) Define was is meant by Inclusive Community Practices you can use the definition provided in the lecture or from an outside source. Write about how your chosen offender topic relates to practicing inclusivity, how this offender group may benefit from having helpers practice in this way, and how the larger society/community may also benefit from inclusive community practices with these offenders. Discuss how these offenders do not have access to equitable resources and why not.
Your material for this question must be referenced correctly, both in-text and on the final Reference page.
4. What information, techniques, skills, and/or training is needed to prepare us for working with this special needs offender? This question is NOT about what the offender needs BUT what YOU need as a CJS worker. Your suggestions MUST be supported by the research you have read (8 points). A minimum of 2 APA references is required for this answer and the reference MUST support your two suggestions.
a) What are two suggestions that you believe are most important in preparing YOU to work with this special needs offender (provide a reference for each of these two suggestions). Be sure to describe how the references relate to your suggestions. Explain what the references say about the suggestion.
b) Explain why you think these two suggestions are important in doing this type of work. Develop your reason for choosing these two suggestions and how they will help YOU not the offender (although they may help the offender in a secondary way, but that is not what this question is asking)
