The goal of the essay is to construct an essay about a SCIENTIFIC CONTROVERSY – whereby groups of scientists have been arguing. For this assignment i have chosen to discuss the Dinosaur Mass Extinction (cretaceous tertiary extinction) controversy where scientists were arguing about whether or not 3/4 of the earths plant and animal population was killed by an asteroid or not. However have am not sure of the point that i need to argue – which is up to you. Some input from a tutor – “Make sure that your final essay focuses in on a particular aspect of this controversy, and doesn’t just talk about a controversial topic.” They would like us to concentrate on the controversy itself in the essay. The essay must engage with some themes covered in the course – Mertons Norms, Fraud Error and Discrimination, Boundaries and Actor Network Theory, Moral Authority of Nature, Expertise and Trust AND the social construct of doubt and ignorance. I will be attaching the Assessment Task details and Essay Guide that has the requirements on how they want us to set out the essay.
