1.During this term, you have read Brubachers On the Philosophy of Higher Education, and you have participated in several discussions of all of the chapters in the book. These readings should have stimulated you to begin to formulate your personal philosophy of higher education. Please articulate your personal philosophy of higher education giving attention to the kinds of issues Brubacher addresses (e.g., the philosophical approaches to higher educationdiscuss which philosophical approach influences your personal philosophy of higher education, the nature of higher learning, the purposes of higher education, academic autonomy and academic freedom, who should be taught, what should be taught, and how should it be taught). Your statement should include your personal philosophy of developmental education. Attached to this examination is a list of questions that you should address in your philosophy of developmental education. PLEASE SEE THE ATTACHMENT. (60 points). 2. Select what you believe to be the three most important periods in developmental education history. Identify each period and describe significant events, trends, ideals, personalities, etc. that make each so important. These periods no doubt parallel equally important periods in the history of American higher education in general. Please explain the relationships or the connections that exist. (40 points). The list is not complete; there may be other areas that should be addressed. It is intended to stimulate your thinking. What are the purposes of developmental education? How do your beliefs about the nature and purpose of higher education and the purpose of developmental education fit together? Who should pursue higher education? Should all students have access to all types of postsecondary institutions? How does developmental education fit into your belief about access? What types of developmental education/learning assistance programs and services should be provided? Should different programs and services be offered in different types of institutions? For whom should these services and programs be provided? Should all students be assessed? Should participation in developmental education/learning assistance programs be voluntary or mandatory? How should student learning be evaluated? How should evaluation data be used? What teaching methods/delivery systems do you believe are appropriate? How should the developmental education/ learning assistance program be organized? How should it be funded? What relationship do you believe developmental programs should have with other academic departments in an institution? What types of personnel should be provided for developmental education? What qualifications should they have?
