Your patient is a 75 year old man with a new onset of diabetes. How would you go about teaching him about his condition, assessing needs, determining readiness and everything else you are alerted to in your assigned readings? Start from scratch and hypothesize,It has been established legally, ethically, institutionally and professionally that the nurse is responsible for the education of patients towards the end of self-care. Teaching and learning are sciences as deep and profound as nursing itself. To address teaching/learning competently, it is necessary to correctly assess the learning needs of your client, determine readiness to learn, define goals which are acceptable to the client, skillfully develop a plan including appropriate teaching strategies, and constantly evaluate where gaps in learning continue to exist and present a potential threat to the human condition. Where a threat persists, it becomes the nursing responsibility to secure the resources for safe and effective life.
