1A ESSAY 3RHETORICAL EVALUATION
Form: Minimum 5-8Pages long PLUS a Works Cited Page, double-spaced, computer printed, MLA formatted, and 12 font. At least 1200 word is required for your Essay to be passing no matter how good it may be otherwise.
ASSIGNMENT: Choose one article from the options provided at the end of this prompt. Write an evaluation of its use of connotation, metaphor, ethos, pathos, and logos and any other rhetorical devices you notice (personification, anaphora, etc) to determine how successful you think the author is in persuading their audience to accept their argument. Make sure to include evidence such as MLA documented quotations and paraphrases to support your points.
Include an Introduction that moves from general to specific, naming the article you are analyzing as well as its author, publication, and audience (specific audience or general audienceif specific, explain who it is). Also, include a one sentence Thesis that explains how successful you think the author is in persuading the audience to accept the authors argument. You may wish to mention in the thesis your evaluation of the elements that the author focuses on.
Provide at least one body paragraph analyzing the authors attempt to use ethos and create credibility. What does the author do to try to convince the audience that they are knowledgeable and as well-informed as possible about the subject? What does the author do to try to persuade the audience that they are not only truthful in their presentation of evidence but also morally upright and dependable? What does the author do to try to convince the audience that they have good intentions and have considered the interests and needs of others as well as their own?
Provide at least one body paragraph analyzing the authors use of pathos. How does the author attempt to appeal to the emotions of the audience? By using appeals to fear? By using appeals to pity? By using appeals to tradition? Other types of emotional appeals? Explain and cite examples.
Provide at least one body paragraph analyzing the authors use of logos. Do you see fallacies anywhere in the authors argument? If so, what are the parts of the authors argument that you see as containing fallacies and explain the fallacies.
Include somewhere in the body, discussion of the use of metaphor, connotation, and any other rhetorical devices you find in the text.
Provide a thoughtful conclusion that doesnt just simply repeat the thesis.
