INSTRUCTIONS The proposal is an official request for approval of your research report topic. In your proposal you will outline the technical problem and present the technology that can help resolve it. Its main purpose is to show that you have a grasp of your topic and the direction of your project. Additionally, the report is informative, not persuasive. You should not try to sell the technology, develop a plan for implementation, or create a budget. See Module 6 for more information and samples of research proposals. Also review the report topic and secondary research requirements before you begin (Module 4). Content of the proposal The section headers below are generic. Do not use them. Instead, create your own, meaningful headings that relate directly to your topic and sections. Introduction State the purpose of the memo with reference to your project. Indicate the problem and solution, mention the scope of the project, and indicate the type of research completed thus far. Background of the problem Outline the technical problem you want to research. This section must contain summarized and paraphrased material from at least ONE secondary source, including an APA style in-text citation. Briefly discuss any or all of the following: What has caused the problem? What is the current technology, system, or method? Why is it inadequate? What are the effects of the problem? How serious is the issue? Any processes or definitions must be outlined. Also be sure to use facts or statistics that give evidence for the problem. Overview of the solution Here you will clearly outline the technical solution you want to research. This section must contain summarized and paraphrased material from at least ONE secondary source, including an APA style in-text citation. Briefly discuss any or all of the following: What is the solution the technology that will help solve the problem? How does the technology seem to work in general? What are some of the unique components of the technology? What are some of the benefits of using this technology to solve the problem? Has the technology been implemented yet? Description of sources (annotated bibliography) Here you will provide a list of at least three secondary sources and describe how they will be used in the final report. Not all the sources you use in the final report need to be included in the proposal. At least one of the sources must come from Humbers library database. For each source, include the following information (in this order): The full bibliographic entry for the article youll use, in APA style. A concise summary of the articles central purpose or claim. A brief explanation of why you believe the article is important and where you will use it in the report. Authorization This section functions as a conclusion to the proposal. In it, you will Refer to your project again, restating your topic focus. Summarize why this research is worth doing. Request authorization to continue with your proposed plan. Your research proposal should be 2 – pages in length (single spaced) and should be submitted as a Word document. Please provide a concise overview of your topic; you will elaborate in the final report due at the end of the semester. SAVING AND SUBMITTING YOUR FILE Your assignment should be a Microsoft Word document submitted through this Assignments page. EVALUATION This assignment is marked out of 20 points and is worth a possible 20% toward your final mark. It will be assessed using the Research Proposal Rubric. Please submit your assignment on time. Departmental regulations state that late assignments are subject to a penalty of 10% off per day late. An assignment more than four days late gets an automatic grade of 0.
