Essay Overview: This assessment task has been designed to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to analyse sociological factors on clients in community services, and to identify the broader social and political frameworks. The assessment requires students to construct an argumentative essay that makes a case either for or against a social policy of their choice. Social policies are those policies that deal with social issues. They are a subset of public policies, and are used by governments for matters of welfare and social protection. Social policies include those affecting education, welfare/income support, public health, disability support, criminal justice etc. Simulation and scenarios will be provided during class delivery, along with guidance regarding access to necessary resources. The essay should be within the prescribed word count of 1200 words (10% leeway) and judged competent in literacy and language skills. It should have a clear structure (introduction, body and conclusion) and should be fully and correctly referenced using the APA system. The argument must be supported by a strong evidence base of current research and literature (using in-text citations), rather than opinion-based and a minimum of ten references are required with priority given to peer-reviewed evidence (journal articles etc). Within the report / essay, the student is required to satisfactorily address the key criteria and cover the required information. Essay Criteria Assessment Criteria R2.
