To receive extra credit you will be required to write a Report based on the below topic,
format, and organizational layout guidelines. The Report will be evaluated on meeting
format and content requirements, as well as accuracy of content, organization, clarity,
grammar, and spelling. The Report must be submitted as a hard copy in person AND
electronically as a .pdf file via our course Canvas site on the date and time as listed in
the course schedule. Failure to follow these guidelines will result in a points score of 0.
TOPIC:
The topic of the Report will be about a human or animal disease/disorder related to
one of the following Chapters/topics covered in the course:
Chapter 2 The Chemical Basis of Life I.
Chapter 3 The Chemical Basis of Life II.
Chapter 5 Membrane Structure, Synthesis, and Transport
Chapter 6 An Introduction to Energy, Enzymes, and Metabolism.
Chapter 7 Cellular Respiration.
Chapter 16 The Eukaryotic Cell Cycle, Mitosis, and Meiosis.
GENERAL FORMAT:
Length:
A minimum of six (6) typed pages. The cover page, supporting information (figures,
tables, pictures, etc.) and list of references are not included in the report length. For
online Canvas submission, the Report must be in .pdf file format.
Text Spacing:
Double-spaced.
Margins:
1 on all sides.
Font:
Any easy to read font; must be 12 point in size.

ORGANIZATIONAL LAYOUT:
1. Cover Page:
Topic Title.
Student Name.
University and Course Information/Number.
Date.
2. Introduction and Review of the Topic:
This is where you briefly define, explain, and introduce the disease/disorder you
will cover including history and relevant background. A brief statement of the goal
of the Report, the topic you are presenting, and why it is interesting or important
is included.
Approximately 1 to 1.5 pages in suggested length.
3. Disease/Disorder Details:
This is where you present information regarding the details of the disease/disorder.
This may include causes, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, prognosis, prevention, etc.
Approximately 4 to 5 pages in suggested length.
4. Conclusion:
This is where you present your summary and personal comments or thoughts on
the topic you presented.
Approximately 1 to 1.5 pages in suggested length.
5. List of References:
This is where you list/cite any references that you included in the text or figures.
A minimum of six (6) references (other than the lecture notes) is required.
FIGURES, TABLES, AND PHOTOS:
You should use any relevant supporting information in the form of figures, tables, etc.
to help make points where appropriate. Figures, tables, etc. can be either placed
within the body of the text or at the end of the Report. The source of any figure,
table, etc. must be acknowledged in the table heading or figure or photo caption and
the full citation to that source listed in the List of References section.

LIST OF REFERENCES:
You should cite references in a List of References section following the body of the
text in the standard format for scientific papers. In the text, cite a reference by giving
the authors’ name(s) and date of publication in parentheses [i.e., (Adams, 2003)]. For
papers with three or more authors, cite by the name of the first author followed by
et al. and the date (Long et al., 1995). At the end of the Report, list references in a
List of References section using the below generic format. A minimum of six (6)
references is required. The course lecture notes are not an appropriate reference.
