Bronx Community College has decided to hold two contests for its new brochures about its National Register for Historic Places landmark, the Hall of Fame for Great Americans. BCC graphic design students will compete to redesign the brochures layout, while BCC HIS20 students will vie to write its text. The Redesign Committee, composed of BCCs President, the Chairs of the Art and History Departments, and a dozen honors students at the local middle school, have decided that the text must explain how the Hall reflects FOUR distinct VALUES held by some Americans during the Progressive Era since sixty-three of the original 98 honorees of at Bronx Community College were inducted during the Progressive Era (19001925). Like most public monuments, the Hall reflects the values of the time and place in which it was built. A value is a belief about what is important in life. A value is NOT an action, event, law or person, though these may reflect a value, and can therefore be used as one piece of evidence. Consult Podcast 37B for more discussion about what a value IS and what it is NOT. As youve learned from Podcast 37, Progressives were united by their faith in science and in the power of government to change lives, so you will ALL write one body paragraph (BP) about how the Hall reflects Progressives beliefs in science and ANOTHER BP about how the Hall reflects the Progressive value of a strong government. You will come up with the last two values on your own. Your brochure should contain a catchy title that will make the middle schoolers who visit the Hall want to read it. In addition, it should explain the Progressive Era well enough so that a middle schooler can understand its main goals and accomplishments. More specific details on what the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion should each contain appear below in Draft Requirements. 2 The Only Acceptable Outside Sources You May Consult https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hall_of_Fame_for_Great_Americans (includes a list of all HOF honorees and the years they were inducted) https://www.bcc.cuny.edu/hallofFame/?page=Architecture (BCC site on the HOF) https://bcchalloffame.commons.gc.cuny.edu/#about (History Department site on the HOF) You must paraphrase the information and cite any of these online sources in parentheses after doing so. Consult Podcast 70 for additional guidelines on citation. These are the only outside / online sources permissible for this paper. Any additional research is strictly prohibited and will be considered plagiarism. Such papers will receive an automatic zero and their authors will be reported to the College for possible academic discipline. Draft Requirements for Body Paragraphs 1. If youve watched Podcasts 60-70 just once, watch them again, especially if you routinely received less than 4 out of 5 points on your quizzes. 2. ALL WORK should be DOUBLE SPACED and typed in 12-point font. 3. Each BP should be approximately 200 words. A strong BP will contain: ? a Topic Sentence that is an argument, not a fact. (For example, BP1s TS might read something like, One Progressive value reflected in the Hall of Fame is belief in the power of science rather than, The Hall of Fame has many scientists or One scientist in the Hall of Fame is Alexander Graham Bell.) ? Evidence (Specific Factual Information, or SFI) from a textbook chapter 3 13 or 14 that shows the value existed during the Progressive Era; paraphrase rather than quote info you found there ? Analysis of textbook SFI (explain how it relates to TS) ? Evidence (SFI) from a podcast (choose from 37, 37A and 42) that shows the value existed during the Progressive Era; paraphrase rather than quote info you found there ? Analysis of podcast SFI (explain how it relates to TS) ? Evidence (SFI) from Hall that proves TS ? Analysis of Hall SFI (explain how it relates to TS) ? Summary sentence reiterates main idea of the paragraph Draft Requirements for Introduction Introductions should be approximately 100 words. Make sure your DOUBLE-SPACED introduction contains the following three parts (you may write between three and six sentences total): 1. Start with a CREATIVE hook – make me want to pick up your brochure! 2. End with a thesis that states which four Progressive Era values are reflected in the Hall of Fame 3. Transition in between the start and end, potentially with general information about the Hall, the Progressive Era or both (but OMIT SFI, instead save that for the BPs)? Draft Requirements for Conclusion Conclusions should be approximately 100 words. Make sure your DOUBLE-SPACED conclusion follows these three rules (you may write between three and six sentences total): 4 1. rephrase your thesis in the first sentence 2. end by connecting the paper to U.S. history after 1920 3. refrain from introducing new evidence in the conclusion (if you did find some there and its important, go back and include it in the appropriate BP) 4. Final Term Paper Requirements Use Firefox to upload to Turnitin. Do NOT include your name ANYWHERE on your document. Do NOT upload if the Similarity Report (red, vertical menu; ask TSC for help if you can’t find it) tells you that more than 10% comes from other sources. You may be plagiarizing if your paper is more than 10% from another source! Students who upload documents to Turnitin correctly will receive a digital receipt that looks like this: If you do not receive a similar receipt after you try to submit, you have uploaded your document incorrectly. Visit the Technology Service Center for help. I will not accept late submissions. The entire paper should be approximately four pages or 1000 5 words, but no fewer than 900 and no more than 1100, DOUBLE SPACED and 12-point font. DO NOT SUBMIT UNTIL YOU CAN ANSWER YES TO ALL QUESTIONS BELOW: ? Did you delete all names, dates and headings from the top of the page? ? Did you DOUBLE SPACE and use 12-point font? ? Did you include a CREATIVE title at the top of the page (centered, bolded and underlined)? ? Did you start the introduction with a CREATIVE hook? ? Did your introduction contain fewer than six sentences and contain a thesis argument in the final sentence? ? Did you omit specific evidence in the introduction, instead saving that for the body paragraphs (BP)? ? Did each BPs topic sentence (TS) identify ONE Progressive value and EXPLAIN HOW the HOF reflects that value? ? Did you use AT LEAST one piece of evidence from ALL three sources in EACH BP? ? Did you follow each piece of evidence with an ANALYSIS, explaining how it relates to the TS? ? Did you use transition words like however and moreover to move from point to point? ? Did you conclude each BP with a summary sentence that reaffirms the TS? ? Did you rephrase your thesis in the first sentence of the conclusion, which should be no longer than five sentences? 6 ? Did you end the conclusion by connecting the paper to U.S. history after 1925? ? Did you refrain from introducing new evidence in the conclusion? If you did find some there and its important, go back and include it in the appropriate body paragraph. ? Did you use spell and grammar check? (If Ive noted more than once on your quizzes that your mechanics and grammar need work, why not try the free software at https://www.grammarly.com/. I get no cut from it!) ? Did you change all contractions to two words? ? Did you read your paragraph out loud or have someone else read it to you and edit as necessary? ? Did you edit paper to be no fewer than 900 and no more than1100 words? More or less will count against your grade. ? Did you visit the Writing Center or a History Tutor if youve consistently earned less than 80% on prior paragraphs? ? Did you paraphrase all information from the textbook or my podcasts, then cite it in parentheses following your own words like this: (Chapter 13)
