In the spirit of integrating your faith with your education, you have the opportunity to take the information you have learned in this class and combine it with Biblical scripture for your research paper. As you may know, Jesus did not merely bring his message with words, but reinforced them with gestures, movement, vocalics, space, touch, and time. As you search the new testament scriptures, look for ways that Jesus used nonverbal communication. Your assignment is to take one nonverbal function and discuss how Jesus used the function. Then you will talk specifically about the function and relevant research about it. Finally, you will use Jesus example and the research to tell the reader how to apply the function in his or her life. You may use any of the following nonverbal functions: Physical Appearance, Gesture and Movement, Facial Behavior, Eye Behavior, Vocal Behavior, Space and Territoriality, Touch and Communication, Environmental Physical Surroundings, and Time. Your paper should focus on Jesus interactions with others and how he used nonverbal communication based on what the Bible says. You need to include theory from our class in your discussion. Once you have expanded on this information, conclude your paper by sharing how one can implement nonverbal communication using Jesus as his/her example. Your paper must have three distinct, labeled parts as shown below: (Papers not labeled in this way will lose three points.) Biblical Reference and Context Recount the scripture you have chosen. Give a brief history of the passage and how it will contribute to the readers understanding of the passage. This section should be about two pages, and it’s worth 20 points. Research What do the experts have to say about the nonverbal communication function? What research has been done in pursuit of this function? Substantiate your conclusions with examples. This section should be about two pages, and it’s worth 20 points. Application Explain how the nonverbal function is used in interactions today. You should also include information on how the function can be misunderstood or misread. What conclusions can you draw about the function and its purpose for enhancing communication exchanges? How can one learn from Jesus’ use of the particular communication style under examination? What should we implement from his style into our communication style? This section should be about two pages, and it’s worth 40 points. Sources: Incorporate your own research from at least three sources. You will lose ten points if you have fewer than three sources. You may use the following sources only: books, journals, newspapers, news magazines (i.e., Newsweek, Time, etc.), library databases or news/organization Web sites. Simply taking information from a Web site does not count toward your minimum of three sources. Your textbook can be another source. Use parenthetical citations. This means that if you use a direct quote, you must cite the specific author (or source, if no author), year, and page number (if available) in parentheses right after the quote. If you paraphrase, cite only the author and page number in parentheses after the information paraphrased. You should also have a bibliography (where you cite your sources). You can use APA or MLA formatting. If you are not familiar with either format, contact the University Writing Center. You may visit them on the web at DBU.edu. This section is worth 10 points. Length and format: The length should be 6-8 pages. There are 10 points possible for the quality of your writing. You will lose points for excessive spelling and/or grammatical errors. You’ll lose five points if you pad your paper with excessive quotes or if you fail to parenthetically cite sources. Format your paper as follows: 12-point type, double-space, and 1″ margins. Plagiarism or falsifying references will result in an F for the course. You may not submit a paper from another course. Grading criteria: The paper is worth 100 points. Before turning in your paper, spell-check it and review it carefully for correct word usage, punctuation, and grammar. Plan ahead so you can use the free resources of the University Writing Center (DBU.edu) Well-written papers will score higher points; papers with poor examples and poor writing quality will receive point deductions. You will receive your paper back with in-text comments and a grading rubric that will list points earned. Due: The paper is due at the end of Session 10 so do not delay your preparations.
