Malaria & Yellow Fever
The course will stress fundamental principles of infectious disease (ID) and the impact of ID on culture and society. After a discussion of conceptual tools used in the study of ID, we will explore in detail the impact of 8 IDs, using the text Twelve Diseases That Changed Our World (Paperback) by Irwin W. Sherman Five Perspectives (CHEAP):  Clinical—The clinical aspects of the disease (cause, disease mechanisms, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and prognosis)  Historical—The historical aspects, individually and societally  Economic—The economic impact on individuals and on society  Artistic—Representation of the disease in the arts, literature, film, song, etc.  Public Health—The public health considerations in controlling and/or eliminating the disease Rubric: The research demonstrates a depth of understanding of CHEAP-related issues by using relevant and accurate detail to support the student’s thesis/arguments. The first 3 pages should cover the Artistic approach (The A in CHEAP) part of MALARIA, so Fine, Folk, Perf/Mov. The last 3 pages should cover YELLOW FEVER but the E in cheap, so Economics (Win/Lose, Δ-Prices, and Migr/Trav). 4 of the files/sources needed are in this dropbox link (Most of them are notes and explanations, CHEAP powerpoint instruction): https://www.dropbox.com/sh/4zstm7lnlbuomb9/AADj63iIl9XXWortqsIi94XYa?dl=0 Let me know if you have any questions!
