Preparing Assignments:

What makes a Good Assignment?

University qualifications aim to provide knowledge and improve the skills and the personal qualities of learners. The knowledge and skills are those required for successful performance in working life and in managerial roles.

The assignments, which are issued by tutors and completed by learners, are the means by which learners provide evidence to show they have achieved the learning outcomes at the standards set by the assessment criteria. Assignments must, therefore, be fit for purpose and enable learners to achieve.

Markers should be aware of the key requirements for the preparation of assignments:

1. The assignment should have a vocational scenario which provides a meaningful context for learners. The scenario is normally stated at the beginning and the tasks sit within it. The scenario must be appropriate to the level and nature of the criteria that are being assessed.

2. The assignment is normally broken down into separate tasks, which must allow the learners to achieve the standards set by the assessment criteria for a particular unit.

3. There can be one or more assignments per unit.

4. An assignment may cover criteria from more than one unit in Strategic Business Management

5. The assessment criteria should be listed at the end of each task, so the learner is clear, which parts of the unit they are aiming to achieve in that specific task.

6. The tasks must be appropriate to the level of the qualification and the nature of the learning which is being assessed.

7. The tasks in the assignment must use language which is appropriate to the needs of the learners.

8. The tasks must take account of the command words stated in the assessment criteria such as evaluate, analyze or explain, as the work provided by the learner needs to deliver what is required and at the standards set by the assessment criteria.

9. Tasks in assignments can ask for a variety of different kinds of evidence which are relevant to the task and also interesting to learners. This can be:

written – reports, plans, notebooks, diaries, papers for a meeting

verbal presentation, interview, recording

practical work within the specialist area of the qualification

10. Assignments can include group and paired work, although it is essential that each learner has produced evidence for each assessment criteria and this evidence is attributable to him/her.

11. All assignments issued to learners must have an assignment cover sheet attached. A sample cover sheet is provided on the ATHE website.

12. All assignments written by centre’s must be externally verified by ATHE, before they are issued to learners.
