Students will research and write a social science essay discussing in detail a social problem or social issue. Papers will be approximately ten pages, typewritten, double-spaced, plus a reference list citing at least three academic sources other than the course text. The facts you state in the body of your paper should be properly cited. Papers should include the following: An overview of factual information regarding the issue – including the local, provincial, or Canadian situation; Relevant statistics; Existing and/or recommended solutions, interventions, programs, or community resources; Relevant aspects of social problems theory: One or more of the theories of social problems discussed in class should be cited in demonstrating that the subject of the paper is an example of a social problem. This is a review of the literature. It is not a discussion of your own personal experience. Please note: If you choose a topic that has been discussed in class, your paper should build upon any information discussed previously. Papers will be graded on content, organization, clarity, and research, including quality of sources.
