Research-based paper and action plan, reflecting on the implementation of peer work and formal addiction interventions into future front-line practice (3 pages, double-spaced, with bibliography) reflecting their understanding of both peer work addiction support, including 12-step fellowships, and formal medical interventions, including medically managed detox and/or rehabilitation and therapy.

Students will summarize both these approaches to addiction. Next, students will reflect on how they might incorporate ideas from and/or referrals to both paradigms into their future front-line practice. Here, students will examine how they expect or desire to practice in the field, where they may encounter people who use drugs and/or people with addictions, and what specific skills they might want to apply and/or programs they might want to explore further for future referrals. They will be asked to consider the accessibility of both paradigms and their programs in the GTA and share strategies for ensuring that both types of engagement will be respected. Finally, students will name one element of either paradigm or another paradigm or approach to addiction, that they wish to explore further. They will conclude by sharing their reasons for wanting to explore this approach and a brief plan for engaging in this new learning.
