Principles of palliative care nursing

The purpose of this assessment is to facilitate your professional development by encouraging you to research and critique literature. This type of assessment reinforces the use of current literature, research and benchmarks to inform your nursing practice. This assessment relates to theme 2. The research question is assess the evidence for managing palliative care in your clinical environment. Choose five peer-reviewed journal articles that are current and relevant and create a literature review of those articles. For example if you work in: Aged care assess the evidence for managing palliative care patients in residential aged care Emergency department – assess the evidence for managing palliative care patients in the emergency department Rural and remote nursing – assess the evidence for managing palliative care patients in rural and remote areas In your review you must include the following: Introduction, background and summary of the purpose of your literature review (rationale) Research question -framed as a question (Ensure population cohort are identified) A synopsis of the methodologies used to obtain your 5 articles The common themes that emerged from the critique of these articles Body of the literature review – critical analysis of the research and perspectives from the literature including an assessment of the similarities and differences (compare and contrast authors opinions on the themes being explored) Conclusion – evaluation of the conclusions and recommendations within the literature and their relevance to your nursing practice. Just wanted to give some guidance about assessment 2. The reason I have a literature review for this assessment is for you to start being able to critically analyse. It is designed to help your academic writing. Moving forward too many students fail assessments because they continue to be ‘descriptive’ writers. The research question and the literature search would be ‘assess the evidence for managing palliative care in your clinical environment. The question is broad, it is designed to be broad so that we dont get 60 papers on the same topic. I just did a search on ‘assess the evidence for managing palliative care in the acute setting’ and for example, 3 themes became apparent quite quickly: lack of appropriate assessment transition from acute to palliative care promoting the palliative approach outside the sphere of oncology Choose 1 theme. Find 4-6 articles that discuss the theme (in total). Discuss how you sourced your articles and a small synopsis of each. The major part of the assessment is to compare the articles – tell me do they agree with one another or not. The literature you should be looking for are research articles, peer reviewed articles, books, policy. You can use anything but another literature review. Stick to this format and you cant go too far wrong Your review should include: a brief introduction reiterating your research question and the purpose of the literature review Introduce the assessment (the purpose of this assessment is to……) Why is managing palliative care in your clinical environment important? and why are literature reviews important? (briefly) a brief synopsis of the methodologies used in your 4-6 articles – how did you search, what databases and key words did you use. a presentation of the common themes that emerged from your critique of the found articles. How many themes where there? what were they? Include here a brief synopsis of your chosen articles as it introduces them to the reader before the main part of the assessment. agreements and disagreements within the articles – compare your chosen articles. Are they agreeing with each other or stating differing opinions? (THIS IS THE MAIN PART) an evaluation of the conclusions and recommendations presented in the articles do they conclude the same things or differing opinions? Do they recommend the same things or differing opinions? commentary on the relevance of this review to your context of nursing – how is it relevant to nursing? a conclusion that addresses potential areas of practice review/development – was the research question important?
