Journal on Mythology in Everyday Life
Find 10 examples of Greek mythology in our world today. *These examples must be ones you have found on your own (not on the internet!). You can use the internet for help with identifying the references to mythology, but if you use a website, you must include a Works Cited entry for your outside source. Please see the example below for help.
Approximately 100 words each.
All entries are due by the last week of class.
List your examples, where you found them, and a description of how the myth relates to its contemporary use.
Here is one example:
Example: The city Apollo Beach, Florida
Where I found it: The SouthShore Campus is located next to Apollo Beach.
Description of how the myth relates to its contemporary use: Apollo Beach was named after the sun god, Apollo, who was one of the twelve Olympians. Apollo was the god of sun, prophecy, music, healing, and mathematics. He was the goddess Artemis twin brother and the son of Zeus. Throughout many Greek myths, Apollo appears as powerful (maybe because he controls daylight!) and enchanting through his music. The people and demigods to whom he gifts musical abilities tend to have his protection throughout their journeys. According to Osprey Observer, in 1938, Apollo Beach was originally named Tampa Beach; it was later renamed to best describe the greatest benefit of the area: sunshine. So in 1958 Apollo Beach was named after the Greek and Roman god of the sun. Apollo Beach was named after the warming sunlight and beautiful beaches.
