Watters, Nelson, and Foer all discuss powerful institutions and their impacts on human thought. While Watters discuss how American pharmaceutical corporations change the way Japanese society think of sadness, Nelson states that mass media promotes a visual culture which “chained to their image-displacement machines like lab animals to dispensers of morphine,” (306) and offers slow thinking to change this fast consumption of images (306). Similarly, Foer warns us automated thinking which makes algorithms eroding our free will.
