In conducting the research critique, the students will come across a wide range of resources and techniques used in gait analysis and different methods of research design and analysis. This assignment will allow the individual to gain experience in reviewing peer-reviewed articles and forming a constructive review on the topic described below. This assignment also gives the students the experience of writing such a critique which will be beneficial in their third year for their final project. This is an individual exercise where you will review two papers in a condition of your choice with the title of Gait in XXXX. The papers should be looking at a similar concept and can be contrasting opinions to allow you to synthesise the information into which study achieved its objectives better, and the reasons for this. Learning Objectives Your assignment should provide evidence that you have achieved the intended learning objectives: 1. Analyse the different research techniques in the literature 2. Critically appraise the literature to form a conclusive piece of work 3. Evaluate and discuss differences in research design and data analysis techniques 4. Performed an individual study and report. Objective You will search for two papers in a chosen area of gait analysis and pathology. For example gait analysis in transtibial amputees where you will review the papers and produce a concise critique of the research that has been undertaken and give an overview of how the pathology affects gait. The technique to use is to not just read and report on what is in the paper, or what it is about, but to see that you can interpret the paper, be critical, review it in context of what is was trying to achieve (did it succeed?) and other related literature. It is NOT about what is in the paper it is about the MEANING and VALUE of the paper You will submit a 1500 word summary (word processed, 1.5 line spacing, 12 point font) where you must have your report with the following sections: Introduce the overall topic field, background and what the critical appraisal is focussed on understanding. This is the main section where you get the majority of marks! You will review the papers in the field to provide a constrasting overview of the research that is currently in that chosen field. Do all the papers agree, what are the methodological backgrounds to the papers, what evidence for the findings. 2) Discussion You present issues regarding the research work (not the research paper!!) Discuss and debate them, this would involve: Criticise the research question, or the way the research was done (methodology), or the interpretation of the results, or all these things 2) Discussion DO NOT REPORT WHAT THEY DID Discuss the meaning of what was done 2) Discussion In other words – the importance or significance of the research question they addressed – the pros and cons of the research method they adopted – the data they collected and presented – the conclusions they dr 2) Discussion for example AFO given to 2 groups of stroke patients. The patients in groups 1 had different age, gender, duration of stroke etc. than in group 2 POOR assignment: tells us that the groups were different. Identifies and reports an issue. Good assignment: tells us why it is important that the groups were different and therefore why they should have been better matched. This is interpretation and discussion of the issue. 4 2) Discussion GENERAL structure: 3 parts 3) Conclusion: Summarise the main points you have made in the discussion section Think: what are the take home messages.. If you had 30 seconds to tell someone about these papers, what would you tell them?
