Imagine you are preparing to participate in a consensus-building decision-making task. You will choose one of three options for solving a budget crisis at your school and present your proposed solution.

1 Read the scenario and the three proposed solutions:

Scenario:
Your college has announced that, due to state budget cuts, it needs to raise money to cover expenses for the following year.

There are three proposed solutions:
Proposal 1:
This proposal would raise student tuition by 3%. Some of the money would go towards financial aid for students unable to pay the increased tuition.
Proposal 2:
This proposal would eliminate pay raises for full-time faculty who earn $84,000 a year or more. The extra funds would go towards offering more courses taught by adjunct faculty, who earn an average of $25,000.
Proposal 3:
This proposal would eliminate pay raises for college administrators, including the college president, who earns $300,000 a year, and deans, who earn an average of $110,000 a year. Some of the money would be used to hire more full-time faculty.

Choose a proposal and prepare talking points to explain your position:

2 Give your presentation.

* Prepare a position statement.
* Offer a cost-benefit analysis of the proposal that you support.
* Anticipate how you will respond to competing proposals.
* Use collaborative language for making suggestions and offering concessions in your anticipated responses.

3 Record your presentation. Audio recordings should be saved as 128kb mp3 files and added as an attachment.
