In a poetry explication, you discuss:
The structure of the poem, including the type of language used and what poetic devices the poet uses. You need to discuss at least four poetic terms from our literary glossary that apply to the poem and explain how all this supports the main theme (point) of the poem.
A brief summary of the poem as well as a LONGER interpretation of the poems deeper meaning and what message it sends the reader.
A few (at least two) specific points in the poem (lines or words) that are especially important to the poems main theme.
Your essay must include an introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. This is an ESSAY, not a numbered list. You could write a five-part essay following this format:
1. First paragraph: Introduction some general remarks about the poem and author, including your understanding of the poems main theme.
2. Second paragraph: Talk about the structure of the poem, the poetic devices the author uses, and the language (diction). How do these add to the poems main theme?
3. Third paragraph: Summarize the poem BRIEFLY and give YOUR understanding of what it means (deeper meaning).
4. Fourth paragraph: Identify at least two specific parts of the poem that you think are very important, and explain why they are important.
5. Fifth paragraph: Conclusion sum up what youve said in the rest of your essay.
