Assessment One: Must Fall Case Study (1,500 words) For this assignment you will explore one example of a struggle over how we relate to and define our colonial pasts in the colonial present. In recent years these struggles have proliferated, with most commentators identifying the successful campaign to remove a statue to the British imperialist Cecil Rhodes on the campus of the University of Cape Town (UCT), South Africa. There are a number of cases you could consider in this assignment the following case: Gandhi Must Fall (University of Ghana) In the assignment you will be exploring the political stakes at play when seeking to decolonise spaces and eradicate colonial and racist violence that exists therein. Specifically, try to structure the case study around the following questions/debates: 1) Begin with a brief overview of the course of events that unfolded with your chosen case 2) Analyse the demands that were being made. In some cases it would just have been removal, but in others it might have also included replacement, restitution, reparation, and so on. What was really being asked for? 3) Use the literature in the further readings from week five to explore the politics of memory and memorialisation at play. And think about the degree to which you would classify the demands and broader politics of your chosen cases as anti or decolonial. And as a reminder, it is vital that you use the essential readings and the further readings to explore the issues at play concerning your specific case.
