Evaluation the quality of the specific published qualitative research

Objective: This assignment is assessing your ability to apply the material you have learnt during the course to the evaluation of published qualitative research. Specifically, your ability to evaluate the quality and contribution to knowledge of published qualitative literature. Task 1 Read Gabbay J & le May A (2004). Evidence based guidelines or collectively constructed mindlines? Ethnographic study of knowledge management in primary care. BMJ 329(7473):1013-1016 (download from Assessment 4 resources below) Task 2 Use the CASP questions (download the CASP tool from Assessment 4 resources below) as headings in a 1750-word essay evaluating the quality (strengths and weaknesses) of the Gabbay J & le May paper. Maximise your mark: Essays have an introduction where you should orient the reader to the paper you are reviewing and the tool you are using to evaluate it. You should write in full sentences (never bullet points), use headings to structure the essay (this is not a Q&A) and think about a logical organisation of the information under each heading. You should provide evidence from the paper to support your claims (referenced correctly), and draw on other sources to support your ideas (eg you may want to draw on readings from this unit to support methodological claims). There are up to 9 marks for structure, organisation, style, format, sources and references so don’t waste them! Task 3 Conclude the essay with a section (around 250 words) giving your perspective on the contribution to knowledge of the Gabbay & le May paper. Maximise your mark: The last CASP question asks “How valuable is the research”. As with all the CASP questions, this is asking about what the authors’ claim in the paper. TASK 3 has a DIFFERENT focus, it ask what YOU think. Consider: 1) Do you think the paper has added anything to our understanding of the topic of EBM and how doctors use it in practice? 2) Do you think the study findings change the way we think about EBM by supporting a previous finding, modifying an existing theory or providing a new theory? 3) Do you think practice should change as a result of this work? There are up to 8 marks available for this last task – this section could move you up a grade!
