The topic for this essay will be the environmental impact of poverty regarding the lead contamination water crisis in Washington, D. C. , an environmental catastrophe that had a significant impact on low-income persons and/or persons of color. In the book, What the Eyes Dont See, the author, Mona Hanna-Attisha details her experience with the water crisis in Flint, Michigan and discusses, among other aspects of the problem, how the poverty of the residents of Flint contributed to the situation. In your essay, you will focus on the lead contamination water crisis in Washington, D. C., an environmental crisis that disproportionately affected people living in an area with high rates of poverty. Include in your discussion of this crisis aspects such as the living conditions of the people of the area prior to the onset of the crisis, the specific problem or problems that produced the crisis, the delays in recognizing or admitting the problem due to the economic and/or racial make-up of the people affected, the response of government officials and/or members of the business community to the problem, the health and economic impact of the problem on the people of the area, the attempts to solve or mitigate the problem, the current condition of the affected area and of the residents of that area.
