Write a how-to guide about how to set a table for dinner. 1. Divide the process that you are explaining into subsections to make sure your how-to article is more organized and easier to follow. Add subtitles to each subsection (a subtitle is a mini title that defines what a specific section will cover). 2. Clearly number each individual step in your how-to. Using numbers makes it much easier to follow each step in the process. A paragraph with several steps given at once is very hard to follow even if transitions like first, second and third are used. A subtitled section should have its own set of numbered steps explaining how to do that larger step. 3. Explain how to do each step. Remember you need to assume that your reader is unfamiliar with the task, so a clear explanation of how to complete each task is one of the most important elements in a good how-to article. 4. Explain why these steps are necessary. How many times have you blown off a tedious step because you deemed it unimportant only to have this backfire on you later? Explaining the importance of these types of steps will help ensure that your reader is set up for success and doesnt ignore a vital step. 5. Give plenty of examples throughout. Remember your reader is likely unfamiliar with this process (after all, thats why theyre reading a how-to article). The use of examples really helps with clarification. 6. Use contrast (antithesis). In other words, say what not to do. It can be incredibly helpful to be told what to avoid doing or that if you see certain results, youve done something wrong. 7. Use comparisons or analogies. Since this process that youre explaining is unfamiliar to your reader, you want to liken it to something that your reader is familiar with. Doing this makes it easy for your reader to visualize or quickly understand what you mean. For example, the directions may say, “The clearance should be 1/32″ (half the width of a penny).” You may not know how wide 1/32 of an inch is, but you can imagine the thickness of a penny.
