Please respond to the following discussion using 3 current references (2014-2019): Describe the communication process. Communication involves the exchange of information, thoughts, or ideas form sender to receiver. The communication can be closed ended or open ended. Open ended communication is therapeutic as it allows the patient to pen up and explain whatever topic is being discussed. In Psychology the goal of the communication process is to focus on the patients concerns (Wheeler, 2014). This allows the patient to be heard and for the clinician to get an understanding of what problems the patient needs addressed and how to teach appropriate coping skills. Discuss the difference between verbal and nonverbal communication. Verbal and nonverbal communication is very important assessments skill in any mental health evaluation. It is important to view the patients facial expressions, body movements, and eye contact during the evaluation. The clinicians ability to recognize nonverbal ques may lead to further assessment of why the patient displays certain behaviors during certain parts of the examination. According to Chahal (2017), it is the congruency between the verbal and nonverbal communication that provide the most useful information during the patient examination. Verbal communication is important but is more reliable when nonverbal communication aligns with what the patient is saying. Identify three attending behaviors the PMHNP might focus on to increase communication skills. Three attending behaviors the PMHNP might focus on the increase communication skills and observation, giving information and giving recognition. Observation is vital in any aspect of patient care and guides the conversation to focus on the behaviors of the patient. In an attempt to better understand the patient observations are made during therapy (Wheeler, 2014). Giving information is another attending behavior that gives the patient a platform to set goals by the clinician providing education and clarifying any misinformation or incorrect beliefs. (Wheeler, 2014). Giving Recognition is also an attending behavior. This form of attending allows the clinician to highlight areas of strength and to work on weaker areas. This gives the patient a better perspective in the direction of can and how to reach goals.
