This paper asks you to compose a 6- to 8-page research project or a 6- to 8-page researched critical argument in which you incorporate at least 8 primary and secondary sources into your paper. You are free to write on any topic or bring together any texts in conversation; the goal is to synthesize sources, controlling the argument or topic so that you demonstrate authority over the topic or effectively (and/ or persuasively) prove your argument. If you choose to research a topic and write on it, be sure you are keeping in mind the so what? and bringing a new perspective or bringing to light an undiscovered avenue about that topic. If you choose to compose a critical argument, similarly be sure you are keeping in mind the so what? and the foundational conversation(s) already in play about the texts, authors, and arguments you are synthesizing. Critical analysis should guide your approach to either choice.
