For this exercise you will choose a public place: a coffee shop, a park, a restaurant, a street corner, a train station, or anywhere else you choose.
Once you have chosen the place you will spend 50 minutes at that location writing what you see. Describe the setting, people, and objects. Write descriptions of everything you can and do not stop for the fifty minutes.
Go into detail, attempt to describe things in a new or exciting way: think about how to use metaphor, simile, personification, onomatopoeia, or other poetic devices. Or you could attempt to describe everything with clichs, hackneyed phrases, and quotations.
Try sentences that are noun heavy, play with the verbs, adjectives, adverbs.
Try describing things using shapes or colors.
The goal is for you not to stop writing, even if it seems like nothing is happening at first discover the action in the place you have chosen.
