1) Check out the website linked here: Click here. (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. The descriptions are brief, so you will likely need to do a bit of additional research about the photographs.
2) Carefully consider each of them in their various contexts (which changes depending upon the art): political, social, economic, historical, biographical, religious/spiritual, etc.
3) Write three paragraphs (at least six or seven sentences per paragraph) on the discussion board (located in this module) in which you describe the following:
A. (paragraph 1): Which photo is the most powerful / moving (to you), and why? You will need to do some research unless you already know a great deal about the contextual backdrop of the art. This part might actually take two paragraphs depending upon which photo you pick. Be as specific as possible. (Instead of saying “the photo makes me sad” or “the photo is encouraging, say exactly why as specifically as possible–and use and cite source material where necessary).
B. (paragraph 2): Which photo is the most “artistic.” Of course, the definition of “artistic” is 100% subjective, so in a sense, you will be making an argument about photographic meaning, technique, etc.–why one photograph is more worthy of being called “art” than another. (It may not be the most moving, but it’s the most artistic). This one might take some research as well.
C. (paragraph 3): Which photo do you think is LEAST significant / artistic, and why? Beyond this, I am leaving this one wide open to preserve flexibility.
Once you post to the board, you can read your classmates’ posts.
** Please ** : Note the due date. This is a graded assignment. I will not reopen the board for further submissions once it closes.
** CAUTION **: Some (not all) of these images are graphic and/or disturbing to some people. However, that may be the very reason why one of them is the most moving.
GRADING CRITERIA:
1) All requirements above are met;
2) Thoughtfulness and breadth of your answers;
3) Grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, diction, etc.
4) For a top grade, going “above and beyond,” e.g. writing more, researching more, replying to peers, etc. is required. Meeting the minimum requirements will not earn the top “A.” It may earn a “B” or even a low “A,” but not a “high A.”
5) ALL sources are cited, both within the text of your answer and at the end (i.e., either a MLA works cited entry or the URL of the source).
After you post your answer, your peers’ answers will be visible (and you may reply to one or more peers).
