Choose an organization or institution (non-governmental, governmental, non-profit, academic), preferably in the Atlanta area, that addresses gender, race, and/or class inequalities. You will be doing an ethnographic study of this organization during the semester. This should include participant observation and interviews with at least 2 individuals who work for or use the servicesof this organization. Participant observation might include time spent at the offices or the organization, volunteer work with the organization (although this is not mandatory), and/or attendance at one or more events. If you have another idea for a project that is more in line with research you are doing for your M.A. or Honors thesis, for example, or your future research interests, let me know. Studentswill prepare a project report, detailing each step of the research process and incorporating interview and other data collected. Here is a guide to organize the paper: Introduction: Write a brief description of the organization you choose and a discussion of how and why you chose it (1-2 paragraphs)Project Methods: State the methods you used (for example, interviews, participant observation). Include information on how many people you interviewed, what their positions, where the interviews were conducted, and what activities you participated in, ifany. (for Honors/graduate students): Include a literature review discussing academic texts that relate to the topics addressed in your paper and/or by the organization. include at least 3 sources from academic journals, chapters, or texts. Be consistent with your citation style; if you are an anthropology student, refer to the American Anthropological Associations style guide: http://www.aaanet.org/pubs/style_guide.pdfDescription of Research and Findings–your ethnographyinclude a more detailed description of what you did–discuss some of the interview data, possibly including quotations from people you interviewed–include an evaluation of the organizations effectiveness in addressing gender, race, and/or class inequalities–suggestions you have based on your research–a discussion of what you have learned by conducting this researchAppendix with your interview =ANTH4040 students: About 5-7 pages including the appendix.
