Use the Anchor-Read-Apply structure to teach students one strategy to comprehend text (examples: sequence events, make personal connections, cause/effect, problem/solution, summarize, find main idea, character traits/feelings/development, character reactions to events, perspective and alternate perspectives, predictions, inferences, etc.) Create an appropriate Anchor activity that will activate students’ background knowledge about the thinking processes involved in the comprehension strategy. Clearly state the purpose of reading the text: “Today, you are going to read/listen so that you can…” Link or copy + paste your text. Create a brief Apply activity matching the purpose for reading, building on the Anchor activity.
