Drawing from Ivkovic & Lotherington (2009) and Kelly-Holmes (2015) (see Week 10), present a case study of a virtual linguistic landscape, as per the template/guideline below. Note that it is important to read both articles before addressing the points in the template. The essay should not exceed 10 pages, not including tables and figures (such as screenshots), if applicable.
The following points serve as a guideline, which you may explore in this or another order.
Point 1: Identify a case study of the virtual linguistic landscape, whereby you will analyze a multilingual website. This may be an educational website, a website of a government or a board of education or a company, etc. The website can be Canada-based or international.
Point 2. Describe the content and the purpose of the website. Record the URL.
Point 3. Describe the layout of the website, identifying particular sections on the home page.
Point 4. Identify the local network of the website, that is: a) the internal network, individual pages (besides the home page) as part of the website, b) and the external network, the links and connections to other websites. What does the latter tell us about the website itself? Do external links reveal additional information about the purpose and message of the website itself. If the website is too complex with many links, select those that you believe are representative.
Point 5. Identify languages (presence of languages) and website language options (content available in multiple languages). If you think its important, count languages How are these website language options represented visually: with flags or in some other way? Is there a particular order the languages are made available through flags or in some other way on the website? Describe and explain. Discuss the informational and symbolic functions of the linguistic item flow (see Ivkovic and Lotherington).
Point 6. Who is the message originator? Who is a potential addressee of messages, in particular languages?
Point 7. Mention anything else that you find interesting and/or important.
Point 8. Include relevant screenshots.
Point 9. Discussion and conclusion: briefly discuss and summarize your findings
