Definition is a type of essay that assists in defining a word or concept for the reader. The word or concept is generally defined by three elements: the word itself, the class to which it belongs, and the specific details and characteristics of the term. Write a five paragraph essay defining a specific word or concept associated with your chosen career path. Develop the essay by giving descriptions, examples, functions, etymologies, and/or stating what it is not. Your chosen essay topic must be approved by the instructor before beginning your assignment. This must be done through Course Messages. Follow essay requirements regarding length, as well as MLA format rules. Composition I Book: Information regarding the Definition Essay can be found on page 40 of this book. You will also have access to sample thesis statements that may help you in formulating your own. However, you still must have at least 6 sentences in every paragraph of the essay. You may use more, but no less. Requirements: Five paragraphs in length At least 6 sentences in each paragraph At least one reputable source is required approved by instructor AVL is the only approved internet source. Print sources, such as books, magazines, etc. should still be approved by instructor. Strictly follow MLA formatting rules. MLA Format: Double Space One inch margins on all sides Times New Roman 12 Font Do not use first or second person pronouns Do not use contractions Beginning information must be formatted according to the instructors example Do not forget headers Works Cited page and in-text citations are absolutely required No outline required on this essay
