As discussed in the Impact of Technology assignment, engineers have created a global network of breathtaking complexity through their ability to invent solutions. There are multiple branches of engineering that have each contributed to this, including civil engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science engineering, electronics and communication engineering, electrical engineering, chemical engineering, and aeronautical engineering. As a result, engineers have influenced or transformed every aspect of our daily lives, perhaps most notably with respect to water, food, shelter, power, goods, transportation and communication. One of the most celebrated inventors who worked in the field of engineering is Thomas Edison, who was an inventor of solutions. Edison acquired a record number of 1,093 patents (singly or jointly) and was the driving force behind such innovations as the phonograph, the incandescent light bulb, and one of the earliest motion picture cameras. He also created the worlds first industrial research laboratory and became known as the Wizard of Menlo Park in the New Jersey town, where he did some of his best-known work, becaming one of the most famous men in the world by the time he was 30. In addition to his talent for invention, Edison was also a successful manufacturer and businessman who was highly skilled at marketing his inventionsand himselfto the public. The purpose of this paper is to argue whether Thomas Edisons inventions have influenced the contemporary world more than any other individual engineer. This will be done by comparing and contrasting Edisons work and its influence with at least one other inventor who worked in engineering fields and as many as two. You will identify which branch or branches of engineering these inventors worked in, and what aspect of life their work influenced. For example, did it impact power? Transportation? Communication? Other aspects of daily life? In this comparison, you may also bring in issues relating to ethics if you feel that it will support your argument. Your argument may be that Edisons inventions are more, less, or equally important when compared to those of other inventors, but you must validate your position through your comparative analysis.
