This assignment will be submitted to Turnitin.
Instructions
Select one of the following three music videos.
Beyonce: Run The World (Girls) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBmMU_iwe6U
A Tribe Called Red Ft. Black Bear: Stadium Pow Wow https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAEmjW9J3_o
The Tragically Hip: Bobcaygeon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6QDjDPRF5c
In a formal essay, including a unifying thesis, address both of the following questions about your chosen video:
1. What do we see of either gender or race in this video? (Focus your answer on either gender or race, but comment on the other construct if its necessary for your argument.)
2. How do the songs musical elements interact with the lyrics and the visual imagery to convey the artists apparent intention or message?
By unifying thesis, I mean that you need to provide an argument or point of view about the video. You need to support your argument with references to course material, class discussions, and further research (reading/viewing/listening) that you conduct for this essay.
Papers must meet the following requirements:
1. Be 5-6 pages in length
2. Be double spaced, 12-point font, 1-inch margins
3. Have separate title and reference pages (which do not contribute to page count)
4. Use a minimum of 8 references. Note: If you use them, no matter how many times you reference them, Course Notes count as 1 reference; the Garofalo text counts as 1 reference; the Starr & Waterman readings count as 1 reference; the Goddard & Kamin readings count as 1 reference.
Exams will be submitted in this assignment page and reviewed by the program Turnitin. Note that although Turnitin is not reviewing quotations in the exams, as the class is only writing on three potential topics, the Turnitin match rates will be moderately high. Your grading team is well-versed in applying Turnitin, so please be sure to maintain academic integrity in your work.
Good luck on this and all of your exams, and have a safe and happy break thereafte.
Our textbook is Garofalo, R. (2009). Rockin’ out, Canadian Edition. Toronto: Pearson, you can try to find the e-text book online. If there not, using other course materials is also good.
