In the article, Tallman discusses artists who have created commercial goods for sale and consider other aspects of the relationship between art and commerce. She prefaces this discussion with the following statement Since Aristotle, if not before, one of the criteria consistently held up to determine what is, and is not, Art has been its uselessness. For the screen assignment, I have asked you to consider the relationship between art and functional objects. What makes a screen print art, and what makes it a consumer item? In a thoughtful written statement, use ideas that Tallman discusses in her article and apply them to your creation of screenprints on objects. Feel free to use the first-person voice and to voice your opinions. There is no word limit either – write as much as necessary to clearly explain your thoughts and ideas. In your opinion, is there a distinction in art and commerce (or craft) between usefulness and uselessness? Are there other factors or issues that come to play as you considered and made your screen prints on functional objects? Did your intent as an artist or your potential viewers/ audience/ customer influence your ideas around art and craft for this project? What other issues need to be considered when considering this conversation between usefulness and uselessness in art? I am looking for written responses that have thoughtfully considered these issues, as well as writing clearly what your opinion is, without generalizations or clichs.
