Instructions: For this assignment you are to choose an element of inquiry contained in When the Emperor Was Divine, and analyze and explain its significance in the context of the work. Such elements may include a discussion of conflict, theme, the development of a character or characters, or even how textual elements relate to or reflect contemporary life and culture. In this essay the writer should demonstrate the ability to select and incorporate convincing textual evidence appropriately. Keep in mind that although the book should be outlined briefly as a way to orient the reader to the material being presented, the essay should not be a review or synopsis of the book, but a developed analysis and examination of specific and particular elements contained within the body of the work.
The essay should be 4-6 full pages in length. If only the book is used, then no works cited page is necessary. If material from other sources is incorporated into the discussion, then a works cited page must be included.
