A simple #hashtag can have a huge impact on drawing awareness to important issues. Sometimes, the movements are effective; other times, they are not. Essay criteria: Minimum 4 full pages – Explain an idea or a movement represented by a specific #hashtag. Include the history, background, and effectiveness of that #hashtag. This must be an actual #hashtag connected to a movement that has appeared on social media, not one you have made up. (EX: #Metoo, #blacklivesmatter, #icebucketchallenge). Please think carefully about your choice. Before you write, look for information to tell you more about that specific #hashtag and the movement you have chosen for this essay. Be informed so you can inform the reader. How to move through the writing process: As always, show your work! Before writing, find one specific #hashtag, the associated movement/ campaign, and the primary social media/ media site(s) where these have appeared. EX: #MeToo, a movement designed to address issues of sexual assault and harassment, has appeared on multiple sites, i.e. twitter, Facebook, and across other media platforms. Be informed. Find out what others have said or written about your chosen /#hashtag and movement, particularly if you do not know much about the topic, #hashtag, or movement. Begin with prewriting. You may freewrite, outline, map, web, or list questions. Use any strategy that helps to organize thoughts and ideas. Turn in a typed copy w/the final essay. Write the essay: Explain the purpose and history of the #hashtag you have chosen, the connected movement, and its overall impact. The introduction must include a thesis sentence that captures the overall point or idea of the essay. (EX: The #metoo movement created a platform for sexual assault survivors to speak up and speak out about their experiences, but for many, this came at a significant cost.) This is not about personal belief, so avoid I statements. Also, avoid you when writing. Include information about the effectiveness of the #hashtag/campaign/movement. Has there been backlash? Has the campaign/movement been mostly positive? The #hashtag may focus on a general topic, i.e. politics, race, gender, religion, community, the arts, or any other area. This must be a legitimate #hashtag associated with a campaign/movement. Turn in all essay items for full credit. Submit the final essay, typed, double-spaced, correctly formatted (Review document formatting guidelines if necessary.) Submit a typed copy of your prewriting and a minimum of two revised rough drafts. Each draft should show changes and improvements from the previous draft. Dont just retype the same draft. Include a meaningful title, which should be a #hashtag, an introduction paragraph, body paragraph(s) and a conclusion paragraph. This is evidence the essay includes paragraphing. However, stretch your writing beyond the minimum required length. You may also include an (appropriate) image/visual to represent the #hashtag.
