Here are some questions to help you: What was the role of patronage during the time period? Who was the patron? Why did she/he commission the artist to create the work? What was the intended impact? How did the artist convey the intended message: by how it was created or the subject of the work? Where was its intended placement? How does that impact the work and patronage? What about objects or figures within the piece convey the intended message? Did the patron instruct the artist? How could have contemporaneous events affect its creation or message?
