Write a double-spaced paper of 5-7 pages, in 12-point Times New Roman font, on the following topic. In the early nineteenth century, Americans strove to resolve their political disputes through compromise, yet by 1860 compromise no longer seemed possible. Why not? What changed during the years between 1820 and 1860? Use the primary sources listed below and from the course readings, as well as your knowledge of the period in supporting your argument. Be sure to state your argument about these changes over time both clearly and concisely in your introduction, and continue to expand this argument throughout the rest of your paper. Be as specific as possible in giving historical examples that illustrate the points that you make in your paper. You do not have to use every one of these documents, but you should strive to use at least three. You may cite the documents below simply as Document A, Document G, etc. You do not need to do any outside research for this paper; all of the primary sources you will need are in this assignment handout. However, if you want to bring in other primary sources for this paper, you may do so. If you choose to use primary documents from the course Moodle site, cite them as they are titled on Moodle (for example, J.H. Hammonds Defense of Slavery, 1836).
