Pick any two poems in parenthesis as the two primary sources! Death is presented differently in the poems The Raven, I heard a Fly buzz – when I died, “The Indian Burying Ground,” Lady Lazarus, and in the creative nonfiction writings 11:20 and A Death in Texas. Compare how death is portrayed in one poem and one creative nonfiction selection mentioned above. Explain how each author uses at least one literary/poetic element to reveal differing perceptions of death and dying and create a theme (main idea) about the topic of death. In addition to your two primary sources, you must incorporate at least one secondary source into your essay to meet the minimum requirements of the assignment Note: Each prompt is asking you to explain how the authors use specific elements to develop a theme (main idea). This means that the theme must be clearly defined and connected to the evidence throughout. Remember that a theme is more than a topic; while the authors are writing about death, for example, what they are saying about death is the theme. Requirements: Write an essay of at least 750 words in response to one of the above prompts. This includes the first word of the essay to the last word of the essay; the essay title, heading, and Works Cited page are not included in the word count. Utilize information from at least three sources, both primary and secondary. While secondary sources may come from the databases, at least one secondary must come from a scholarly Internet source. Remember that a secondary source is one that analyzes a primary source. Use in-text, parenthetical citations in MLA format each time you paraphrase, summarize, or quote directly from a source. Include a corresponding MLA-formatted Works Cited page. Use third-person academic voice for all essays in this course. Do NOT use first person (I, me, my) or second person (you, your). Use the literary present tense (say “the narrator writes in her journal” not “the narrator wrote in her journal”). Save and submit your work as either Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx) or a Rich Text Document (.rtf). The Originality Report generated by Turn It In must not exceed 25%. Submit work early to review the report and contact your instructor with questions.
