Choose an exhibition from one of the local art museums listed previously and visit the exhibition.
(Handout posted to Canvas of approved museums.) You will discuss a single piece of artwork from the
exhibition you chose and compare/contrast it to a piece of art in your book. You will write about it critically
in an essay format in MLA style. Please remember to use vocabulary you have learned in this course
this shows that you have absorbed the material.
Museum Field Notes: Pictures from chosen work/exhibit, copy (photo) of receipt/wristband/sticker, brief
description of the work (similar to selfie assignment), artwork name, artist, name of exhibit (SEE
TEMPLATE IN CANVAS)
PAPER LAYOUT:
Cover page: your name, date, essay title and class title with section ARH1000 Roman [section]
2-3 pages of text (NOT including cover page, image page)
MLA paper formatting and citation formatting
Last page (no essay text) include a picture of the pieces
STAPLED or put in a presentation folder
Your paper needs to discuss the following (not necessarily in this order):
Name of artwork, artist, dimensions, materials and year created
Comparison and contrast of the work
Formal elements (Materials, line, color, texture, etc.)
Content (What does the work depict/show? What is it about?)
Composition how is it composed (unity, scale, balance, rhythm etc.)
What is the context of the work? In what era was it created?
Why did the artist create it?
What interpretations can be made from the work?
What is your reaction to the work?
How did you experience it? How did you feel in the presence of the piece?
Refer to the book for ideas for discussion (especially Part 1)
Cite sources such as books, news articles and websites (not doing so may result in an F for the
assignment and possibly the class)
Photo of artwork (can be taken by you or from book/internet) *Depending on museum policies for
photographing work.
