Perkins Gilman writes of gender inequality and argues that women’s domestic responsibilities have led to dependence on men and the exploitation of women. Although she gives a great deal of weight to structural explanations such as socialization and environment that led to women’s location in society as the “weaker sex”, she also argues that men and women are hard wired to have different principles: women love and compassion, men competition. What similarities ( if any) do you see in Gilman’s argument with women’s position in today’s society? What differences?Discuss Gilman’s analysis in terms of women’s development compared to men when she uses the metaphor of the corset. What is she arguing?According to Gilman, what determines the economic (in)dependence of an individual? How are sex-distinctions related to one’s economic status and equality?please cite: Edles, Laura Desfo and Scott Appelrouth.
