1. Write an analysis of the literary text novel “The Scarlet Letter” by Nathaniel Hawthorne. 2.Focus your analysis on one THEME of the text. 3. Even though you are working with many sources, quotation should still remain a small percentage of your overall essay, no more than 10 or 20 percent, with your own writing comprising the bulk of your composition. You will need to quote both the novel itself and your research, though, of course, paraphrase and summary are also good ways of citing a text; just make sure to document all direct references, whether they come from the novel or your research, in parentheses following the sentence. Note also the slight differences in format for block quotations as compared to regular quotations included in your paper 6. You have a wealth of secondary material available to you in the additional articles included in the Norton Critical edition of the text (see especially Puritan Background and Sources (291 386) and The Scarlet Letter [Criticism] (418 669). Though they are technically primary sources, not secondary, you may make use of The Custom House and the excerpts from Hawthornes American Notebooks as if each were a separate source in fulfillment of the research component of the assignment. You may, of course, consult other print sources, as well. 7.
