Discuss the history of the study of thanatology in the United States. Who are the founders and the people who are making advancing the study and why. What are the different branches or areas of concentration from a professions point of view such as anthropologists, religious leaders, sociologists, etc Describe (COMPARE AND CONTRAST) the topic of death from different perspectives listed. Describe in more detail the topics that pique your interest, less in the topics that don’t interest you as much. Provide enough information to show you have a clear understanding of the topic, not just a one sentence answer. In your descriptions, include what it means for students studying from the listed points of view. How can it and how does it impact societal changes? Social Science point of view – what aspects do social scientists (sociologists, public program writers, etc) need to focus on when applying thanatology? Forensic point of view – forensic science may look at the field of thanatology differently. How would the study of death impact how they do their work? Anthropology- what do anthropologists think of the field of funeral practices, etc. Healthcare/legal point of view (doctors/hospice/heroic efforts, etc) Legal point of view (disposition of remains of the body/personal items or property/effects) Ethics of observing/studying death and dying Privacy and respecting the individuals desires Ensure you include at least 2 references from scholarly journals, professional organizations (.org or .edu), the textbook and other works to support your understanding. For this topic, there are so many different schools of thought, there should ideally be more references than the 2 required minimum. 3. Thanatology is the study of death and dying. Describe these important topics within the discipline. You may elaborate more on the areas that particularly interest you or complement your degree program to deepen your understanding but address all topics. Hospice care or palliative care (differences in philosophies of food and/or medication restriction) Right to die/physician-assisted suicide (where is it legal) Euthanasia Mass tragedy or deaths Certifications in Thanatology Bereavement Programs and program development 4. Find resources for the study of thanatology to include the different certifications available and the resources to gain these certifications. Are there local agencies where you live? What are the national agencies? On-Line resources? Describe what you find and if you find the resources that you think are important. 5. Wrap up this topic with a brief description of what you learned vs what you thought these meant before writing this project. What, if any, additional steps will you take after this report? After everything you have learned from this course, what is your take-away regarding a professional career in the study of thanatology? This option should be submitted at a minimum of 2 – 5 pages, 12 font, double spaced, APA reference style. This is a substantial thought process so use as many pages as you would like to complete your thought process. The page count is the minimum requirement.
