My prof has assigned me with the task of writing a research essay on fake news. What fake news is according to him and the way I was taught in his class is: fake news is news that is attempting to present itself as fact or real news to deliberately misinform someone or as propaganda, spread via traditional news media (print and broadcast) or online social media. So he advised me, that to come up with a topic, I must talk about something I care about and how I can involve fake news in that. So then I used India, as something I care about (as it is the country I was born in) and took Whatsapp as a platform for spreading fake news. Thus, my title Whatsapp messages spreads fake news throughout India.This is the thesis that I came up with, however, I only wrote this to help you and this is not to be used in the version you are writing: Indian users of Whatsapp are exploiting the power of the app by spreading fake news by forwarding fake and old images with false captions. Although Whatsapp acknowledges this issue and is taking measures by limiting the spread of such content, removing accounts that have links to political parties and by verifying such images before they are sent, it is proving to be difficult for Whatsapp.What must be done in this paper is you you must research and explain how Indian users as well as major indian political parties are using the popularity of Whatsapp to spread fake images for voting influences, spreading hate and whatever other ways it is being exploited by indian users and/or indian political parties that you find in your research. You must also research and write about how and what Whatsapp is doing to prevent the spread of such images and finally how difficult it is for them to do so.When completing this essay, the essay must show how and why Whatsapp is being exploited through fake news and images, by indian users, especially major indian political parties. What exactly Whatsapp is doing to prevent such methods and how difficult it is for them. And when writing about how difficult it is you must include, wherever appropriate, that it is difficult because of their chats being end to end encrypted and how that limits what they can do on their app, obviously research and write about this more in depth. The position that is taken in the essay must be in favor of whatsapp, meaning, it must be shown in the essay that whatever ways you have found that WHatsapp is doing to prevent the spread of fake news, that you are in agreement of it. Please refrain from using the word “I” as it is not an opinionated essay and is a research essay. Finally the essay will indirectly inform readers aka my proffessor, which images are fake news and that this problem is ackknowledge and is being addressed, slowly but surely.Use India’s politics and fake news through the use of whatsapp as a guide to write about in this essay.
