OBJECTIVE: Learning Outcome #9 The student will be able to demonstrate an appreciation for aesthetics Learning Outcome #1 The student will be able to communicate effectively using writing skills During the Romantic era, you learned that art, music, and literature contained elements of subjectivity: each independent observer has a unique point of view of any one piece of artistic work. 1. Look up one artwork not discussed in class by each of these three painters (No Portraits!): Caspar David Friedrich, Theodore Gericault, and Eugene Delacroix. For each of the three Romantic artworks, you are to: A. Research and explain for what reasons did each of these artists create this painting. For whom did they create it? What is the story behind the painting? In your own words and cite your sources (One paragraph per painting, three paragraphs total) B. Discuss in your own words what possible Romantic themes are included in that painting, and how the painter is expressing those themes. Remember to provide the TITLE, NAME OF PAINTER, YEAR IT WAS CREATED, and the URL where I can see the painting. CITED SOURCES: One source for history. One source for the image. If the source is the same for both, then CITE THE SOURCE TWICE. Example for 1B: Caspar David Friedrich, Klosterfriedhof im Schnee (1819). Fantastic: The painting contains elements of death, which belongs to the theme of Fantastic. Death can be seen in various areas: the destroyed gothic cathedral, the winter season, the dead trees, the graveyard, and the funeral procession. Furthermore, the use of crosses and a cathedral refers to religion which is also part of the fantastic theme. Nature: The painting also contains elements of nature. One sees the German landscape among a forest, with snow on the ground signifying the winter season. Sublime: The painting also contains the theme of Sublime. The deserted forest and ominous cold weather suggest the overwhelming and dangerous state of nature. It causes certain frightful emotions of helplessness and despair. Exotic: The painting contains a theme of exoticism. The countryside forest with the cathedral in ruins suggests a distant and foreign place. It is strikingly unusual to find such a place or even suggest that it exists. The pictures attached are the three pictures that must be used and the themes of romanticism that must be listed are; Nature Emotions Fantastic Sublime Revolution Exotic
