The paper can include some description, but should also analyze, ask why? discuss consequences and effects, make an argument supported by evidence and reasoning, and/or otherwise demonstrate thoughtful analysis of your chosen subject — analysis that shows your thinking on the subject and does not merely repeat what the sources tell you. The strongest papers generally draw from the descriptions and analyses of various sources and then proceed to present their own coherent argument and conclusions on the subject – conclusions supported by evidence and reasoning. As noted above, the research paper can be approached in several ways. The following are guidelines for organizing material into a cohesive paper. Students can write a paper, which provides a brief background of the topic, a review of the research that has been conducted, the consequences or effects of the issue/topic, offer a meaningful argument or resolution based on the evidence, and provide thoughtful recommendations for future directions. Students may choose one of the above topics and narrow their focus by identifying and describing a particular trend or pattern found in the literature. Moreover, students may narrow their focus by examining an issue across gender, race, or ethnic considerations or local issues. Students may argue a position on a particular issue or topic. Position papers typically begin with a question, and ask for an assessment of various points of view on the question and a resolution based on an assessment of all available evidence.
